Wellbeing health checks for your whole team

Why employers offer them.
No law requires wellbeing checks. Employers offer them because several common health risks have no symptoms.
Risks you can't feel
The NHS says high blood pressure and high cholesterol usually cause no symptoms. The only way to know is to measure them.
Checked at work
The NHS and Ireland's HSE both list workplaces among the places people can get their blood pressure checked.
Open to everyone
Unlike health surveillance, a wellbeing check isn't tied to a workplace hazard, so you can offer it to the whole team.
Clear tax treatment in the UK
GOV.UK says one health screening a year is exempt from tax and National Insurance, unless it's provided through salary sacrifice.

Voluntary and confidential.
Health information is special category data. The ICO's guidance on workers' health sets out how a voluntary wellbeing scheme should work.
Taking part is a free choice
The ICO says optional wellbeing testing should only happen where workers have a free choice, with no adverse consequences if they decline or leave the programme.
ICO: health monitoring(opens in a new tab)Results stay with the clinician
Workers can assume what they tell a health professional is confidential. Managers should see medical details only where they need to, and releasing them to non-medical staff generally needs explicit consent.
ICO: occupational health schemes(opens in a new tab)Tell staff how results are used
Explain beforehand, preferably in writing, how the information will be used and who may see it.
One reading isn't a diagnosis
A single raised blood pressure reading doesn't mean someone has high blood pressure, and diabetes and cholesterol are confirmed with lab blood tests. A high result is a reason to see a GP.

Where wellbeing checks fit.
Wellbeing checks are voluntary. These are the related duties and rules employers ask us about. This is a summary to help you plan, not legal advice.
Great Britain
- HSE: wellbeing isn't health surveillance(opens in a new tab)
HSE says wellbeing checks are not legally required. Health surveillance is a separate duty for workers exposed to risks such as noise or dust.
- Work-related stress risk assessment(opens in a new tab)
You must assess the risk of stress at work and act on it, in writing if you have five or more workers. A health check doesn't replace this.
- Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003, section 320B(opens in a new tab)
One health screening a year is exempt from tax and National Insurance. Salary sacrifice arrangements must still be reported.
Northern Ireland
- HSENI: health surveillance(opens in a new tab)
Health surveillance is required where workers remain exposed to health risks after controls are in place. General wellbeing checks sit outside this.
- HSENI: Management Standards for stress(opens in a new tab)
HSENI uses the same Management Standards risk assessment approach to work-related stress as HSE.
- UK tax exemption for health screening(opens in a new tab)
The exemption for one health-screening assessment and one medical check-up a tax year applies across the UK.
Republic of Ireland
- HSA: a short guide to health surveillance(opens in a new tab)
The HSA treats blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol checks as health promotion, which is voluntary or part of employer policy, not health surveillance.
- HSA: Work Positive CI(opens in a new tab)
The HSA's free process for assessing psychosocial risks, which the 2005 Act covers alongside physical ones.
- Revenue: medical check-ups(opens in a new tab)
One medical check-up a year isn't a taxable benefit if it's available to all employees. Revenue requires it to be carried out by a registered medical practitioner.
